New data from Juniper Research has found that the development of smart grids linked to smart cities will result in citizens saving $14 billion (€11.67 billion) per annum in energy bills by 2022. This is up from the $3.4 billion (€2.83 billion) saving estimated for 2017, resulting from smart metre rollouts, energy-saving policies and sensing technology to improve grid reliability and efficiency. Annual shipments of smart electricity metres in Europe will grow by 71% in 2017 to reach 23.1 million units, according to a new research report from the M2M/IoT analyst firm Berg Insight. Growth is driven by accelerating deployments in France, Italy and the UK that coincide with the final phase of the nationwide rollout in Spain. (more…)
