Close up on electric car charging

Bosch expands electric vehicle charging network to over 1 million points

Charging their electric car quickly, conveniently, and most importantly, anywhere: for many drivers of electric cars around the world, this is often more of a wish than a reality. Along with range and costs, charging is one of car drivers’ biggest concerns, as a study by the German Association of Energy and Water Industries (BDEW) shows. Bosch wants to remedy this with its proprietary platform, so it is now setting the next step for better access to charging infrastructure: offering more than one million charging points on four continents.

“Bosch’s declared aim is to make charging points widely accessible and put an end to the chaos caused by different charging apps,” said Marco Zehe, the president of Bosch’s Electrified Motion division. (more…)

Soracom joins AECC to drive next-gen connected vehicle solutions

The Automotive Edge Computing Consortium (AECC) has announced that Soracom has joined as a member. The AECC is a non-profit consortium of cross-industry players working to drive best practices for the convergence of vehicle, computing and networking technologies.

As a member of the Consortium, Soracom will collaborate with AECC members to evaluate the work being done by mobile network operators, automotive manufacturers, communication companies, cloud players and other related technology standards bodies and technology communities to ensure that new technologies and standards will meet the future needs of connected vehicles. Soracom’s expertise in IoT connectivity will help the AECC to ensure that technologies remain connected with the most consistent and efficient solutions for every instance.

“Connected vehicle services, such as intelligent driving and high-definition mapping, will require secure and reliable connectivity to connect to the cloud. As an AECC member, Soracom will work with the organisation’s global member base to identify a next-generation solution for vehicles to securely connect with their cloud backend to support high-volume data and intelligent services,” said Kenta Yasukawa, the CTO and co-founder at Soracom. Additionally, at the April AECC All Member meeting, he concluded his presentation by saying: “We will conduct a proof of concept of an authentication and secure channel for connected cars using GSMA specification SGP22/32 embedded universal integrated circuit card (eUICC) with AECC members Toyota and ITOCHU Techno-Solutions Corporation (CTC), and share the results.”

The AECC accelerates the development of connected vehicle best practices and new use cases by sharing relevant findings, requirements and technology solutions with industry standards organisations. The AECC’s vision is to create a new era where connected vehicles use high-volume data and AI to help improve safety, sustainability, reliability and the driving experience.

“We’re very pleased to welcome Soracom to the Automotive Edge Computing Consortium,” said the AECC board of directors in a joint statement. “Soracom’s technology and experience make them invaluable collaborators for AECC as we work together on solutions for the next generation of connected vehicles.”

Metro Cebu to benefit from Iteris’ ITS solutions

Iteris has announced it has been chosen to support the selection and deployment of Intelligent Transportation System (ITS) technologies in Metro Cebu, Philippines as part of a USTDA-funded ITS modernisation project.

This technical assistance activity is provided by USTDA to the grantee, Philippines’ Department of Transportation (“DOTr”). The project involves developing an ITS master plan for the growing Cebu City and 12 surrounding local government units. Because of their large population and quick growth, the region is facing considerable challenges related to transportation infrastructure, causing congestion, delays and unsafe traffic conditions.

The project aims to identify ITS solutions that can improve traffic management, reduce vehicle emissions, enhance road safety and advance efficiencies in intra/inter Metro Cebu cargo and passenger movements.

Iteris is a subconsultant to Nathan Associates, LLC, a global partner for providing analytic and economic solutions worldwide. Iteris will lead the ITS activities, including assessment of current conditions, development of ITS technology recommendations, review of potential technology suppliers in the U.S. and creation of the ITS master plan.

“We’re happy to have been selected to be part of this international initiative, which is another recognition of our team’s expertise in modernising transportation infrastructures,” said Moe Zarean, the general manager of mobility operations services at Iteris. “This project will be critical to improving mobility in Metro Cebu at an essential time of growth, and we’re excited to work closely with all stakeholders to make it a success.”
