Telstra and Ericsson win top innovation award for NB-IoT

The award was announced during the 2019 GSMA Asia Mobile Awards (AMA) Ceremony held in conjunction with Mobile World Congress Shanghai 2019. AMA is considered the most prestigious awards platform for Asia, recognising companies and individuals driving innovation across Asian markets.

The technology milestone was reached in September 2018 when Telstra and Ericsson successfully deployed Narrowband Internet of Things (NB-IoT) data connections up to 100km from a base-station in Telstra’s commercial network — the longest-range NB-IoT connection of its kind.

Designed by Ericsson, the NB-IoT solution extends the 3GPP standards-based limit from around 40km out to 100km and is activated entirely through software upgrades, with no changes required to NB-IoT devices. This opens huge opportunities in IoT connectivity in rural and remote areas, particularly for logistics, agriculture and environment monitoring. Ericsson has deployed NB-IoT data connections up to 100km with Telstra and DISH.

Telstra is one of the first globally to offer both NB-IoT and Cat M1 technologies.

The NB-IoT Extended Cell Range 100km solution is one of the Massive IoT enhancements launched by Ericsson last January, in line with its cellular IoT vision.
