Busan, South Korea – Simultaneous wireless information and power transfer (SWIPT) is a promising technology to connect and energise low-power devices wirelessly over a long distance. The radio frequency-based technique would thus enable the Internet of Things in the future. However, state-of-the-art low-power SWIPT receivers still consume much more energy for communication than the amount they can harvest, which hinders further development and growth of the Internet-of-Things (IoT) ecosystem. Westminster City Council is using a network of twenty EarthSense Zephyr monitors as part of a pilot study to monitor changes in air quality at primary schools trialling School Streets. The pilot is one of the largest data collection studies launched in London to investigate the difference in air quality prior to and during the operation of School Streets to date.
