TPG Telecom wins smart meter deal with South East Water

TPG Telecom has secured a large smart metering rollout in Australia through a 10-year deal to manage one million narrowband Internet of Things (NB-IoT) smart meters for South East Water in Victoria. The project will replace mechanical water meters with NB-IoT digital meters, helping to save water and money for South East Water’s 1.7 million customers residing in their service area from Port Melbourne through to Portsea and across towards Gippsland.

Deployed across South East Water’s 27,000km pipe network, the new, digital water meters will revolutionise water management in the region, with an estimated five billion litres of water saved annually through enhanced network operation and customer leak detection. The digital meters will enable customers to track and manage their water consumption using daily updated information, helping them identify usage spikes and providing greater insights into household and commercial water use.

The connected digital meters will also help South East Water and its customers identify leaking taps and appliances, faulty irrigation systems, and identify behavioural change opportunities to reduce water use and save customers money on their water bills.

“We are excited about our partnership with TPG Telecom and the cost savings and sustainable benefits digital meters will bring to customers, community and the environment,” Mark Elvins, South East Water Acting General Manager Digital Utility, said in a media statement. “As we look to the future, we need to build resilience into Australia’s water network to continue to respond to the challenges of water scarcity, a changing climate and growing population, with TPG Telecom we can now do that.”

TPG Telecom has developed end-to-end IoT solution combining NB-IoT connectivity, SIM and device management to enable deployment of smart meters at scale. This allows South East Water to seamlessly and securely connect the NB-IoT smart meters, reduce costs and security risks, and provide the critical monitoring and enhanced coverage needed for its extensive network of water meters and pipe network.

“TPG Telecom is proud to be at the forefront of NB-IoT deployments with this significant advancement in water resource management, none of which would have been possible without the innovation and thought leadership of South East Water,” said Chris Russo, TPG Telecom general manager for enterprise and government customer sales and Solutions. “This significant rollout demonstrates our commitment to innovation and customer service excellence and will provide South East Water with the insights and capability it needs to better manage water use for its customers and the environment.”

Veea and Tecno deploy Niagara software infrastructure in transit system

Veea has partnered with smart buildings firm Tecno Buildings on the initial commercially deployed use of the Containerised Portable Niagara (CPN) software framework in a mass urban transit system. Veea collaborated with Tridium to develop CPN and is a Tridium partner deploying containerised Niagara at the network edge that helps remove wired connectivity in greenfield and brownfield deployments.

Using the Veea Edge Platform, Tecno Buildings has deployed a pilot program revolutionising how IoT (Internet of Things) data is collected in an urban mass transit system. Tecno Buildings has installed VeeaHubs with CPN at select stations throughout a major urban subway network in Latin America to wirelessly monitor and gather systems data. The move focuses on smart building connectivity experts validating how CPN and LoRaWAN (long-range wide area network) networking revolutionise IoT data collection for improved subway system maintenance and energy consumption.

“The Veea Edge Platform is living up to its stellar reputation for flexibility and ease of deployment in edge-based functionality,” said Alfredo Melnick, founder and general director of Tecno Buildings. “We’re delighted to have Veea as a strategic partner. Veea’s smart edge solutions reduce installation complexity and offer competitive advantages that we can share with our end customers. We look forward to many successful deployments in additional project rollouts.”

The subway pilot program intends to demonstrate that combining the Veea Edge Platform running CPN within a LoRaWAN will reduce energy consumption costs while providing proactive and predictive maintenance alerts for unplanned system downtime.

“It is fantastic to see this deployment of Containerised Portable Niagara on Veea’s Edge Platform in such a unique setting,” said Michael Youngs, global sales director for OEM at Tridium, an independent business entity of Honeywell International. “Tridium values the Veea team and their ability to find innovative use cases for CPN. The transportation network deployment demonstrates a winning combination of containerised Niagara framework on Veea’s Edge Platform and Tecno Buildings design skills. Running Niagara at the edge will reduce downtime and costs for the transportation hubs and allow for use case expansion at the same locations to address other needs.”

The Tridium Niagara Framework is a comprehensive software infrastructure that serves as a central console for connecting real-time operational data to the people and systems that manage workflows in smart buildings, data centers, industrial processes, smart cities and other aspects of business enterprises. With CPN running on VeeaHub products, the Niagara Framework benefits from the full range of wired and wireless networking solutions to connect to electro-mechanical systems onsite, while offering easier installation and maintenance as well as reliability afforded through network redundancy.

The Veea Edge Platform enables building managers and property developers to experience more efficient deployments, higher speeds and lower latencies with more networking options, wide range of expansion options, less downtime, and significant cost savings, along with the simplicity of remote management and monitoring of IoT devices.

“We couldn’t ask for a better strategic partner in Latin America than Tecno Buildings, with their laser focus on smarter buildings and more sustainable construction,” said Allen Salmasi, chairman and CEO of Veea. “It’s exciting to see our Veea Edge Platform demonstrate the world’s first-ever transit system use case for Containerised Portable Niagara. Veea with CPN has the potential for enabling transformative solutions for a variety of edge use cases in all types of environments requiring reliable monitoring and control of the infrastructure with more options for network connectivity, onsite and remote management, streamlined predictive maintenance and improved energy consumption.”

The two companies are also collaborating on a project extending Niagara Framework beyond buildings, recently installing outdoor VeeaHubs with CPN and LoRaWAN technology at a coastal resort to reduce energy consumption and enable more efficient control of water levels.

City of Lakeland adopts Iteris for smart mobility and safety initiative

Iteris announced its selection by the City of Lakeland, Florida to provide smart mobility infrastructure management technologies to support the city’s Intersection Crash Avoidance Safety Program (iCASP). The initiative will help improve safety at high-impact intersections.

“We’re thrilled to be supporting FDOT and the City of Lakeland in their Intersection Collision Avoidance Safety Program,” Kevin Exner, regional vice president at Iteris, said in a Wednesday media statement. “This is not only an excellent chance to carry on with our extensive work in the Florida market, but it also combines two of our greatest passions at Iteris: the advancement of ITS infrastructure and the enhancement of road user safety.

The project includes the deployment of Vantage Next, Iteris’ next-generation video detection system and VantageLive!, an easy-to-use, web-based data service that allows users to view activity at their intersections by automatically collecting and analysing vehicle, bicycle and pedestrian data, removing the need for manual, costly data collection efforts. These technologies will enable FDOT and the City of Lakeland to proactively prioritise easy-to-implement red light running countermeasures with the Red Protect safety feature.

Lakeland will also utilise BlueTOAD roadside units at select intersections. BlueTOAD combines real-time and historical Bluetooth detection with vehicle-to-everything (V2X) interconnectivity to enable various connected vehicle applications as well as to provide synchronisation with transportation agency travel-time and performance measures-based systems.

Vantage Next, VantageLive! and BlueTOAD are key components of Iteris’ ClearMobility Platform, the world’s most complete solution to monitor, visualise and optimise mobility infrastructure continuously. The platform applies cloud computing, artificial intelligence, advanced sensors, advisory services and managed services to help ensure roads are safe, travel is efficient and communities thrive.

The City of Lakeland initiated this project due to a high number of crashes attributed to red lights running in certain high-impact intersections throughout the city. The deployment of Iteris’ advanced technologies at 19 of these intersections is expected to increase safety for Lakeland’s travelling public.

In March, Iteris announced that it had been awarded a contract by the Virginia Department of Transportation to implement a statewide smart mobility initiative.
