PCCW Global and Guodian High-Tech sign MoU

PCCW Global recently signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Beijing Guodian High-Tech Technology (GDHT), a satellite IoT company in mainland China, during the 10th Belt and Road Summit held in Hong Kong. The collaboration aims to jointly build satellite-based narrowband Internet of Things (NB-IoT) services for Hong Kong, Macao and Belt and Road regions.

As a provider of satellite NB-IoT data communication services, GDHT will use its self-built and operated low-Earth-orbit (LEO) satellite network, the “TianQi IoT Satellite Constellation,” to deliver low-cost, low-power, long-range data transmission for IoT devices. PCCW Global will utilise its robust network infrastructure and global operational experience to collaborate with GDHT in developing base station infrastructure across Hong Kong, Macao and Belt and Road regions, supporting key sectors such as transportation and low-altitude economy with satellite NB-IoT services.

PCCW Global will also use its Console Connect global roaming IoT SIM card to collaborate with GDHT in advancing IoT and related technology development, exploring a wide range of application scenarios to meet the needs of the global market.

Frederick Chui, the CEO of PCCW Global, said: “Many large-scale infrastructure projects across Belt and Road regions, such as energy pipelines and transportation networks, require reliable connectivity. However, due to complex geographical conditions and underdeveloped infrastructure, terrestrial network coverage remains limited. Our collaboration with GDHT brings advanced satellite IoT technology to these regions, helping to address connectivity gaps and enhance operational efficiency and risk management for enterprises.”

Lyu Qiang, the chairman and CEO of GDHT, said: “Satellite IoT is set to become a vital part of global digital infrastructure. GDHT’s TianQi IoT Satellite Constellation is designed with flexibility in mind, taking into account the diverse communication environments and technical standards across different regions, offering efficient and scalable IoT solutions to meet global needs. Through our collaboration with PCCW Global, we aim to accelerate innovation in satellite IoT applications and drive rapid growth of the global IoT industry.”

The TianQi IoT Satellite Constellation is mainland China’s first LEO IoT satellite constellation. Phase one of its global deployment has been completed, with 37 satellites have already been launched. The constellation is set to expand further, ultimately providing real-time continuous global coverage. Its services will support industries such as energy, forestry, agriculture, tourism, water resources, petroleum, electricity, marine and environmental protection, enabling applications like remote monitoring, asset management and smart agriculture. The service also supports consumer electronics including vehicles, walkie-talkies and wearable devices, meeting personal connectivity needs in areas without terrestrial network coverage.
