Ericsson demonstrates how massive IoT saves lives
Many citizens are asking what more authorities can do to keep people safe. In collaboration with China Mobile and the China Geological Survey Institute, Ericsson is demonstrating how massive IoT can be used to save lives through disaster monitoring and early warnings.
Many parts of China are prone to powerful earthquakes leaving hillside communities at high risk for sudden landslides. When disaster struck southwestern China in 2017, villagers there had little warning about the approaching danger. That soon could be changing however.
Ericsson, China Mobile and the China Geological Survey Institute are announcing plans to trial a disaster monitoring and warning system later this year based on massive IoT technology. The solution will use the broadcasting capabilities of China Mobile’s existing LTE network along with a new IoT system to broadcast public safety warnings – capabilities that could potentially save lives during a future disaster.
Ericsson’s expertise in mobility and system development is redefining how authorities are responding to emergencies. In the municipality of São José dos Campos, in São Paulo, Brazil, public safety authorities there are using an emergency response system, developed by Ericsson, to dispatch the best-suited response teams. Since the system was deployed in 2012, crime rate in the municipality has declined by around 20%.
Mobile networks are well-suited for these kinds of public safety applications because of their ability to handle traffic from large numbers of low-energy devices that are transmitting small volumes of data. Ericsson and its partners will demonstrate the disaster monitoring and warning system using massive IoT during PT Expo China which takes place in Beijing, September 27-30.
