Microsoft Corp. and OpenAI, two companies that are deeply thinking about the role of AI in the world and how to build secure, trustworthy and ethical artificial intelligence to serve the public, have partnered to further expand Microsoft Azure capabilities on large-scale AI systems.

Through this partnership, the company will accelerate the breakthroughs in AI and strengthen OpenAI’s efforts to create General Artificial Intelligence (AGI). The resulting improvements to Azure will also help developers create a new generation of AI applications. The partnership includes the following:

Companies will focus on building an unprecedented Azure computing platform that will deploy and operate increasingly advanced AI models, including hardware technologies that build on Microsoft’s high-performance computing technology, and adhere to corporate ethics and trust policies. This will form the basis for AI progress, which will be implemented in a safe, reliable and trustworthy manner, which was a key reason for the two companies’ cooperation decisions.

Over the past decade, innovative applications of deep neural networks, coupled with increasing computing power, have led to constant AI breakthroughs in areas such as vision, speech, language processing, translation, robotic control, and even games. Modern artificial intelligence systems work well for the specific problem they have been trained for, but obtaining AI systems that help solve some of the most difficult problems the world is facing today will require generalisation and profound mastering of multiple AI technologies.

OpenAI’s and Microsoft’s vision is that general artificial intelligence will work with people to help solve currently unsolvable multidisciplinary challenges, including global challenges such as climate change, more personal health care and education.

“Creating AGI will be the most important technological development in human history, with the potential to shape the trajectory of mankind,” said Sam Altman , CEO of OpenAI. We believe that it is important that AGI technology is deployed securely and that its economic benefits are widely utilised. We are delighted at how deeply this vision is shared by Microsoft. ”

“AI is one of the most transformative technologies of our time and has the potential to help solve many of the world’s most pressing problems,” said Satya Nadella , CEO of Microsoft. ” while always keeping the security of AI at the forefront and centre of focus – to benefit everyone. ”
