Velodyne executive develops the way Velodyne delivers innovative lidar technology for driver autonomy and assistance

Dr. Mircea Gradu, senior vice president of Quality and Validation at Velodyne Lidar, Inc. , will give a presentation on lidar technology at the upcoming VDI International Conference: Automotive Sensor Systems at Munich, Germany, on February 14. 

Gradu will review the critical factors of success in the test and in the validation of the lidar sensors that must be achieved in order to have vehicle autonomy and advanced driver assistance systems (ADAS).

During his presentation, Gradu, a distinguished engineer who is head and president 2018 of SAE International, will propose that the autonomous vehicle community (AV) work together, in a non-competitive manner, to identify the requirements and methods of test and validation of lidar sensors. The objective of the initiative would be to create a deposit of elements for validation of sensors that can become an industrial standard and be available to all companies in the industry.

Velodyne has more than a decade of experience in manufacturing and validating lidar sensors that meet the strictest safety and reliability requirements of original equipment manufacturers (OEMs) and Tier 1 suppliers. The company It has extensive internal validation capabilities and a network of external laboratories. He also has the knowledge of millions of miles of road traveled by his customers in the automotive sector, the technology sector and commercial vehicles.

“Companies within the self-employed sector need to work together, just as companies in the aerospace sector cooperate with security issues, to ensure the safe launch of VAs,” said Gradu. “Velodyne is committed to fostering this learning experience of the sector and thus apply rigor in the validation of sensors, especially in borderline cases where there is a great security risk.”

At the VDI International Conference, attendees will hear that Gradu provides a summary of advanced lidar solutions, along with a look at market segmentation and specific requirements for lidar. Gradu will address the key considerations in testing the lidar components and validating the system. It will also examine the implications of lidar safety and standardisation to provide advanced driver assistance capabilities, such as Lane Keeping Assist (LKA), Automatic Emergency Braking (AEB) and adaptive cruise control (Adaptive Cruise Control, ACC).

To help conference attendees learn about driver assistance systems, Velodyne and the VDI International Conference have published a technical report on driver assistance technology on the conference website. The report establishes the levels of vehicular autonomy defined by SAE, the advantages of lidar sensors and how lidar allows a focus on safety that provides significant advances in driver assistance.
